The Sage of the Shakya Clan
Siddhartha Buddha, the Sage of the Shakya Clan was born a prince in 623 BC. At the age of 29, he renounced the world and became a monk, immersing himself in meditation for six years. The end of that period saw him experiencing a Great Awakening during which he discovered the Four Noble Truths. He taught those truths until his death at the age of 80.
Shakyamuni Buddha statues are placed on altars, images that show how the Truth can be found within oneself through meditation. Buddhists use statues not just as ornaments but as reminders of the spiritual potential in each of us. Shakyamuni is usually shown seated in the lotus position, the fundamental position for meditation.
