Kamakura Buddha History
The original Kamakura Buddha was cast in 1292 and was housed in a temple which was swept away by a tsunami tidal wave in 1498. The heavy bronze statue was the only thing remaining after the storm, and it has withstood the elements for another 500 years. The Kamakura is approximately 30 feet tall, and it weighs over 120 tons.
The Kamakura is said to have an inspiring face, with half-closed eyes that express its serenity and wisdom that seem to be far above the worries of the world. Rudyard Kipling immortalized the Kamakura in poetry, And whose will, from Pride released, contemning neither creed nor priest, may feel the Soul of all the East, About him at Kamakura.
